Notes and Editorial Reviews

I need say little about Perlman's complete set of Paganini's 24 solo Caprices, Op 1. Surely Paganini himself would have admired their dazzling bravura and infinite care with bowing detail. As always with this artist the (analogue) recording is closely balanced, and therefore has an extremely vivid presence.

-- Gramophone [5/2000]

Selections recorded at Brent Town Hall and EMI Abbey Road Studio no 1, London, England. Nicolo Paganini's famous 24 Caprices are known around string circles as the unwritten Rite of Passage for any violin player. Virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman proves that he has definitely arrived with a stunning recording of all 24 Caprices; a feat most virtuosos have only considered.
Read more Throughout the recording, Perlman proves he is peerless as he presents his trademarked perfect mix of technical control and artistic expression, leading listeners to believe that the difficult passages are easier than they seem. Every note is evenly articulated during the series of awkward runs of no 5 in A minor, and Perlman nonchalantly produces the difficult ricochet in no 9 in E major, as if every bow were nothing more than an afterthought. With such technical dominance, Perlman uses his privilege to bring musicality to what may never become anything more than an etude to most violinists. Perlman's eloquence makes Paganini's most predictable lines sound like unexpected brilliance. When Paganini wrote these caprices, he intended them for other violinists of high caliber who could recognize every detail and nuance. Perlman's attention to Paganini's wishes makes this album an indispensable addition to any string collection.
