Notes and Editorial Reviews

Superlative singing from Sumi Jo complements really authentic playing from these Viennese players.

Here is an imaginatively conceived and brilliantly executed collection of vocal Johann Strauss numbers. This is quite the most exciting performance I have heard of the original soprano solo version of Fruhlingsstimmen, with Sumi Jo's luxurious coloratura soaring gloriously over the orchestra. The vocal arrangement of the Liebeslieder-Walzer and Richard Genee's show-piece adaptation of Wo die Zitronen bluh'n are no less thrilling.

But it is by no means just the coloratura pieces in which Sumi Jo excels. The characterisation she gives to the contrasted parts of the audition song from Die Fledermaus makes it as
Read more compelling an interpretation as any. The fish-selling song from Eine Nacht in Venedig comes up with equal freshness. Add the way she skips from note to note in 'Draussen in Sievering' and the gentle hiccup at the end of the 'Tipsy Song' (an adaptation of the Annen-Polka), and one has an uncommonly well- thought-out and superbly varied collection.

The participation of the Vienna Volksoper players under veteran conductor Rudolf Bibl ensures the authentic style not only in the vocal items but also in the short linking orchestral pieces. I could, to be sure, have done without yet another Fledermaus Overture. It's a pity, too, that Erato claim 10 minutes' more playing time than there is, and that Michael Rot's excellently scholarly notes on the origins of each item are sadly mangled in their English translation. Nothing, though, can diminish the superlatives due to Sumi Jo's exquisite singing.
