Notes and Editorial Reviews

Willy Treffner was born in Moravia and from his early childhood he felt drawn towards singing. Although he gave in to his parents' urging and enrolled at the Technical University of Vienna, at the same time he began to study singing at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Just before his second state exam he put himself up for a guest performance at the opera house in Plauen. This went very well and he secured a seasonal contract. He went from there to Nuremburg, then Hanover, then Frankfurt and finally the Dresden State Opera, where he stayed until it was closed in 1944 because of the War. He then moved to Austria where he appeared at Graz. In 1946, he was in a serious car accident which left him with frequent memory lapses on stage Read more and put his career in jeopardy. He then became a carpenter, a career he pursued for 29 more years until he died in 1980. In 1938, the record company Electrola became aware of the young tenor. His first record was published in 1939 and despite the enormous competition from other Electrola tenors he was featured in the operatic repertoire. During the War he did make other recordings but they were never published. It seems a miracle that now, almost sixty years later, we have ten hitherto unpublished recordings of Willy Treffner at hand, among them four duets with the glorious Margarete Teschemacher.
