Notes and Editorial Reviews

Winner of an International Record Critics Award in 1984, Decca’s pairing of the two Falla ballets with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony is still a recording to prize. The interpretations are suave and finely crafted, seductive rather than incandescent, but nonetheless very appealing. The recorded sound is good, although the acoustic is too “churchy,” causing Falla’s colors to run just a bit (Decca’s engineers learned to do better at St. Eustache, the venue for the Dutoit/Montreal Symphony recordings, in the years after this one was made). – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
