Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set includes a 144-page booklet with composer biographies, glossary and listener's guide. It also includes both ADD and DDD recordings.
Bravo to Deutsche Grammophon for creating such a high quality box set compilation. Almost a music appreciation course in itself, the three CDs come with one hundred biographies of composers, a musical terms glossary and a short listening guide. But what really makes THE YELLOW GUIDE so remarkable is that each selection--mostly complete movements or songs--is performed by musicians of the highest caliber. Shlomo Mintz, Herbert von Karajan, Orpheus, Marta Argerich, James Levine and many others are the signature artists for DG, and they are what make it sound so good.
The composer biographies,
Read more while short, are well written. Each composer is given a page of the booklet, and paired with the entry is a DG album jacket photo featuring a work by that composer. The biographies are quite comprehensive, including composers such as Corelli, Rodrigo, Lutoslawski, Ockeghem and Villa-Lobos, yet the CDs contain more of the standard repertoire of classics. While every single performance in THE YELLOW GUIDE is excellent, it would have been nice to include a few pieces by some of these lesser known composers. However, for a compilation of classical music from all eras, this is about the best you will find. Read less
