Notes and Editorial Reviews

Laurent Petitgirard's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra may one day come to be regarded as the greatest cello concerto to be composed in the last decade of the 20th century. The composer maintains that the work "is not based on any argument" and is instead an exaltation of the cello. A dark hued work, this mellifluous piece is served well by the beautiful playing of Gary Hoffman. 'Le Legendaire' is an unusual piece not simply for its makeup - violin, chorus and orchestra - but for the fact that the chorus is sung in Esperanto. But there is no story here. Instead, this piece is simply a depiction of the mysterious figure, be it Peter Pan or Buddha, who encounters war and leaves with a message of peace. Augustin Dumay, to whom the piece is Read more dedicated, turns in a appropriately powerful performance. 'Hamelin' for solo cello is a tour de force for the cellist and is perhaps the single greatest work for solo cello since Britten's Cello Suites. Although there is no narration, the work loosely evokes in all its varying moods Robert Browning1s 'Pied Piper of Hamelin.' Read less
