Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Mariinsky label's fourth release features the acclaimed Russian pianist Denis Matsuev joining Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra for recordings of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 3 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998 Matsuev has established a reputation as one of Russia's greatest and most dynamic pianists. Matsuev is particular renowned for his interpretations of music by the Russian composers and has collaborated with the Sergei Rachmanioff Foundation. He was choses by the Foundation to perform and record unknown pieces of Rachmaninoff on the composer's own piano at the Rachmaninoff house Villa Senar in Lucerne.

***** "A magnificent performance.
Read more The longer, more taxing version of the first movement cadenza has rarely been more thrillingly captured on disc, but the slow movement shows that Matsuev can also swoon with lyrical grace." – Classic FM Magazine (UK)

Total disaster May 17, 2012 By Bayard Johnston (Pfafftown, NC) See All My Reviews "Bought this on spec, to add to my small collection of SACDs.
Everything is wrong: Massive distortion (harmonic distortion?) in the concerto turning orchestral tuttis into hash; piano is too close and sounds more like a saloon instrument in a movie western; execution overall strangely idiomatic. I have not tried listening to the Rhapsody.
This disk is unlistenable and I plan to request a return authorization."

The incredible Rach 3 April 6, 2012 By Richard H. (Glendale, AZ) See All My Reviews "This is probably Rach's most popular concerto and this is an excellent performance by both orchestra and soloist. The rhapsody is also well done. The beautiful melody used in the movie "Somewhere in Time" is one of the greatest ever written. " Report Abuse
