MUSIC FROM THE COURT OF BURGUNDY Ciaramella YARLUNG 05785 (61:26 Text and Translation)

Music by PULLOIS, DUFAY, CICONIA, GRIMACE, PYKINI, BINCHOIS, AGRICOLA, GILBERT, JOSQUIN, ANON, GHISELIN, ISSAC, BUSNOIS, PINAROL

There’s no note in this release about the sources of these instrumental transcriptions. Most are presumably based on manuscripts such as the surviving Casanatense Read more Chansonnier , written at the court of Ferrara around 1480, but composed largely of earlier three-part secular songs by Busnois, Binchois, Agricola, etc. A selection was arranged by one of Ciaramella’s two directors, Adam Knight Gilbert, who also wrote, very stylishly, three of the remaining 26 pieces on this release. There are well-known pieces in the lot, such as four versions of Fortuna desperata , the anonymous A cheval tout home a cheval , and Ciconia’s O rosa bella —the last sped up, shorn of its text and dramatic setting. Arrangements such as these took on a life of their own, divorced from their original context, becoming very popular throughout many of the courts and guilds in the more prosperous parts of Europe. Nearly all of it is bright, extroverted stuff, from pieces that could have cheered a small gathering to those that might have accompanied major ceremonial functions.

The range is perfectly suited to Ciaramella’s variations on both the alta cappella (several shawms and a brass instrument) and the recorder ensemble. This is only their second album. Their first, Music from Renaissance Germany , is available on Naxos 8.557627. However, each of the group’s six individual musicians (plus four singers on four selections, and a percussionist) has taken part in other recordings, and they’ve played together for some time. The original ensemble was composed of then-graduate students at Case Western Reserve University in 2003. I saw them live last year; within a little more than a month, I’ll be seeing them again. Their range of instruments, stylish interpretations, textural sensitivity, and technically expert performances are equally in evidence here. With its excellent sound, this is strongly recommended.
