Notes and Editorial Reviews

During his lifetime, Walter's Mozart conducting was as highly regarded as his conducting of the music of his mentor, Gustav Mahler. Perhaps he did underestimate Mozart when young; but there is no excuse for young musicians to do so now if they are wise enough to buy—or if someone is generous enough to give them—a set of these remarkable records or tapes. There is no need to detail this or that tempo or movement; suffice it to say that Walter redeems Mozart from parochial and modish thinking about interpretation—be it over-Romantic or dryly Classical. Nietzsche wrote, in Beyond Good and Evil, of Mozart's "good company, his tender enthusiasm, his childlike delight, his politeness of heart, his longing for the graceful, the enamoured, the Read more dancing, the tearful, and his faith in the south". This, and much more besides, is everywhere apparent in these wonderful performances recorded by Walter in the last years of his life. It is a set on no account to be missed by anyone who cares for great music or great music-making
