Notes and Editorial Reviews

These performances are full of all sorts of perceptions in catching the varied worlds of Mörike's vision: the inner torture of Des es, O Seele!, the sheer beauty of Im Frühling, and the virtuosity of Der Feuerreiter are just three of the most telling examples of his art.

If we now take a historic perspective on [Fischer-Dieskau's] career we can see and hear that it was in the late 1950s that he came into his full mauturity. For about the next ten years tone, vocal command and intelligence were in perfect balace. That is what makes [this issue] so rewarding: indeed, essential for any collector of Lieder... With his special gifts at word-painting and comprehending a poet's inner meaning, the
Read more baritone has always placed Hugo Wolf at the centre of his repertory. I recall the excitement both in these pages and among collectors when the baritone's first recording of the Mörike settings came out. In those days recordings of Wolf were not easy to come by. The old HMV Hugo Wolf Society sets were unavailable and nothing much had replaced them. This release came as a revelation, but sadly had a short life in the LP catalogue. Fischer-Dieskau was to record the songs with Barenboim, for DG, in the 1970s, and a selection with Sviatoslav Richter (also DG), but I think the 1957 performances are by and large the ones to have. They are less intellectually concentrated than the later ones, yet are full of all sorts of perceptions in catching the varied worlds of Mörike's vision, even though Barenboim is sometimes more perceptive and more agile than Moore in the all-important piano parts. The inner torture of the marvellous Des es, O Seele!, the sheer beauty of Im Frühling, the virtuosity of Der Feuerreiter are just three of the most telling examples of his art here. In Begegnung one ideally wants a soprano or tenor, and in some of the other songs versions by alternative singers can be preferred. However, as a whole this series of performances has an integrated style that has no peer, even if I would want Fischer-Dieskau/Barenboim for certain pieces.
