These recordings were made when Sauer was in his late seventies, and the recently discovered solo works in particular reveal his famed delicacy and tonal beauty, despite the inevitable background noise. Sauer's playing is masterful, especially in Chopin and his own pieces, although his desynchronization of the hands in Chopin's E flat Nocturne, however poetically played or even authentically conceived, may polarize critical responses. An outstanding historical release.
