Notes and Editorial Reviews

Operatic superstars Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel lead the cast of this 'Don Giovanni' under Georg Solti. Terfel is a rarity among baritones not because he has committed 'Don Giovanni' to compact discs three times, but because in each of the three he performs a different role. He was Claudio Abbado's Leporello on Deutsche Grammophon, and Arnold Östman's Masetto on L'Oiseau-Lyre. Here he presents a Giovanni who truly revels in his own ill-doings, unrepentant to the end, and hardly as horrified as others by the flames of hell springing up in his dining room.
Michele Pertusi is an agile, full-voiced Leporello, vocally believable in disguise as the Don. The Commendatore of Mario Luperi is suitably menacing and ghostly as he arrives to

Excellent, With One Slight Reservation (Imagined?) January 19, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Everything about this recording is excellent, with one possible reservation. Mozart's great masterpiece is superbly by sung Bryn Terfel, Renee Fleming, Ann Murray, and the rest of the excellent cast- the singing is not in question. Nor is Sir Georg Solti's steady conducting and the customary brilliant work of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. With regard to the singers, I was highly impressed with the towering performance of Bryn Terfel, who manages to portray Don Giovanni as an absolutely despicable, narcissistic, lustful, and even treacherous character. He accomplishes this through astonishing recitative, dialog, and sung passages, exuding a brutality and lack of compassion which some critics may have found to be excessively harsh (I thought it was brilliant!). The listener can easily sense the venom in Giovanni as Terfel blasts away arrogantly at whomever gets in his way as he plots and seeks out his latest tryst- in short, an incredible performance. My only reservation concerns the sound quality, which to my ears seemed slightly constrained and compressed, especially in some of the orchestral passages. Perhaps this may be due to the recording venue, the Royal Festival Hall in London and not a recording studio; whatever the case, this deficiency may be totally imagined on my part and is certainly not enough to diminish the sense of satisfaction and enjoyment any listener is sure to get from this powerful recording. Recommended." Report Abuse
