Notes and Editorial Reviews

The works on this disc are examples of duetti di camera, a 17th-century Italian genre related to the secular cantata, in which the two singers sing the same text alternately and together, which is to say they are two-voice monologues, not dialogues like opera duets. Handel wrote this group of duetti in the early years of the 18th century, but apparently held them in high regard, for he borrowed from them repeatedly throughout his career, recycling their ideas into works such as 'Messiah,' 'Water Music' and 'Judas Maccabeus.' Considering the fertility of invention to be found here, it is a wonder the duetti are not performed more frequently. This is, in fact, one of the few CDs to be devoted entirely to them, with soprano Rossana Bertini and Read more countertenor Claudio Cavina accompanied by theorbo, cello and harpsichord in dedicated performances that speak of both scholarly and musical care.
