Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is, at least in part, one of the odder releases you'll come across for a while. It takes the famous Chaconne from the second violin Partita, the so-called "symphony for solo violin," and uses it as a background for a "tombeau," played on the lute with added vocal lines taken from various chorales, which is a lament on the death of Bach's first wife Maria Barbara. Credence for this practice is found in a festschrift article written by one Helga Theone which decodes some of the number games Bach was fond of weaving into his scores. Unfortunately, though the article is cited as the basis for this recording, it is not reprinted within, so what we're left with is sort of a scholarly period-practice fantasy crossover piece which, on its Read more own merits, is compelling in its mournful earnestness.
The remainder of the disc, indeed the majority of it, is taken up by lute transcriptions of two of the Bach solo violin masterpieces, the g minor Sonata and the d minor Partita from which the Chaconne comes, heard here in its entirety. They sound good on the lute and are given well rounded performances by Jose Miguel Moreno. Read less
