Notes and Editorial Reviews

Since its January release, itsnotyouitsme’s debut album Walled Gardens has garnered a host of notable reviews. Following last month’s excellent Time Out New York review by Steve Smith -- who called the album "gently mesmerizing stuff regardless of category" -- and a solid New York Times review by Allan Kozinn, they turned up on The Very Short List (www.veryshortlist.com) who suggest via Venn diagram that the album is the intersection of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Pink Floyd’s Meddle, and Brian Eno’s Music for Airports Vol. I. They write: “The four songs on Walled Gardens…are the definition of understatement: no lyrics, and only a handful of instruments and musical themes…Yet the overall effect is lush and evocative and somehow Read more humane rather than tedious or annoying or dystopian, as if all the sensory distractions were removed from your perception one by one until only the sound of your own mind remained.”

A couple weeks later the duo showed up on New York magazine’s Approval Matrix, finding real estate in the “brilliant lowbrow” quadrant as "awesome Washington Heights ambient rockers." A day later Walled Gardens got a favorable review from Audiversity.com. They write: “[The album] purrs and coos through a collection of moody instrumentals, Burhan’s electric violin sashaying before McMurray’s grounding electric guitar melodies. For two people, Walled Gardens sounds interestingly vast. One, if not both the men know how to milk a melody for every ounce of feeling it holds, stretching it out in a series of loops and wisps, and not only conjuring the presence of a looming black cloud, but offering the ray of light that provides hope it is just a passing storm.”
