This modern music is beautiful! May 8, 2013 By Homer Edward Price (Sylva, NC) See All My Reviews "As a long-time listener to classical music, I had despised the sound of 12-tone serial music since I first encountered it. It struck me as random noises which could only be of interest to a mathematician. By contrast, I have always loved all other forms of 20th and 21st century classical music, from Stravinsky through Bartok and Shostakovich to Steve Reich. So imagine my amazement as I listened to the music of Elliot Carter, which sounds like serial music with a human touch. It held me spellbound, entrancing me with the atonal equivalents of melody, rhythm, and romanticism, all in such a novel form that these hackneyed terms do not do it justice. I have no idea how Elliot Carter transformed an Austrian mathematical formula into great American music, but he did. And I am grateful to the Pacifica Quartet and the New Music Concerts Ensemble for bringing together such a wide ranging collection of wonderfully performed pieces by him. Many of them are quite recent: Carter was at the height of his powers at an age when most of us would be surprised just to be alive!" Report Abuse
