Notes and Editorial Reviews

One prime characteristic of CD which contributes much to this record is the total surrounding silence. There was no cause for complaint about the original surface, when I first heard the LP version in 1976, but time's winged chariot can brush the best of surfaces with its passage, and there is a particular satisfaction in hearing those epochmaking phrases that open Tristan breathe into our consciousness out of the total quiet. The record itself is a great pleasure. Davis can press rather hard on the phrases, with exciting urgency at the climaxes—and he accompanies Norman superbly at the height of the Liebestod—but he had not yet then grown the natural gravity that brings such rewards in other aspects of Wagner.

Norman sings
Read more the Wesendonk songs beautifully, especially "Träume" and "Stehe still"; "Tm Treibhaus" really needs a deeper sense of suffering and of decay. But this is a welcome reissue of some distinguished performances.

Jesse Norman - Beautiful Voice October 4, 2012 By Bonnie B. (Altadena, CA) See All My Reviews "This is an older cd but still excellent in this time. Jesse Norman's beuatiful voice is perfect with Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony. The Isoldes Liebestod, in particular, is heavenly and tear-provoking. I listened to it over and over."
