Notes and Editorial Reviews

In his search for a 'theme' for each Boston Pops collection, John Williams has turned to the love of his native land. Many non-American listeners are likely to be put off by the inclusion of what they might see as a lot of jingoistic nonsense. America the beautiful, the Battle hymn of the Republic and the Prayer of thanksgiving may all be a part of every American's heritage, but performed in a solemn and religiose manner by a large mixed choir they seem to this listener at least to be out of place on an otherwise eagerly anticipated Boston Pops album. The purely orchestral items work best, in particular a nicely balanced "America medley", incorporating three Bernstein compositions New York, New York, Lonely town, and America, Read more Morton Gould's American salute (based on When Johnny comes marching home) and Billy May's sparkling arrangement of When the Saints go marchin' in, in which the orchestra really lets its hair down. The digital recording is well up to the standard we have come to expect from this source.
