Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set was made at a concert performance in 1979, and received with reasonable enthusiasm by RO the following year. The revised version of Stiffelio, it hasn't quite the conviction as a work of the earlier piece because the story has become more implausible in the transformation, but it is still worth hearing. The key role is that of the unfaithful, remorseful Mina; it is sung here with great feeling and technical assurance by Caballé, encapsulated by the "Salvemi tu, gran Dio" prayer in Act I and the scene at the start of Act 2. None of the other singers is on that level of achievement. Cecchele gives a standard tenor performance, replete with lacrymose touches as Aroldo and Juan Pons is powerful as old Egberto.
