Notes and Editorial Reviews

Arthur Honegger wrote his score for the spectacle (part dance, play, mime, and opera) The Story of the World at Play (Le Dit des Jeux du Monde) for a chamber ensemble consisting of flute/piccolo, trumpet, strings, and percussion. It's an early work, close in sound to the tone poem Le Chant de Nigamon, and it already provides clear evidence of that instant ability to conjure up a particular atmosphere that served the composer so well in his numerous film scores. The music is often very dissonant, but at the same time melodically conceived and passionately, indeed expressionistically communicative. Fans of the composer will hail it as a major discovery and it's very well presented here. The Concerto da camera for flute, English horn, and Read more strings comes from the composer's very last years, and its gentle, contrapuntal charms make an apt contrast to the youthful intensity of its disc mate. There haven't been so many previous recordings of this work to prevent this version from earning an equally enthusiastic recommendation. This disc is clearly a major addition to the Honegger discography.
