Notes and Editorial Reviews

...I enjoyed the Left-hand Piano Concerto... The writhings of double-basses and contrabassoon at the opening are gruesomely present, and Entremont is a dextrous soloist, vehement and delicate where required; his tone is clearer than Rogé's for Dutoit... The 'cake walk' allegro section is slow, strutting and robotic, with creepy viola and cello harmonics, sleazy muted trombone and clicking percussion never sounding stranger, the whole passage advancing with an insidiousness that Dutoit can't match.

------

Ormandy and his Philadelphia Orchestra play these works to the greatest
Read more effect, as you may guess, and Entremont shows himself a well chosen soloist. The big tunes (and there are plenty of them) are given with all the richness of the Philadelphia strings, while in the jazz stuff everyone is as at home as an American orchestra should be. A good time is had by all, in fact: which is not meant as an adverse criticism, for the obvious enjoyment of the players (such a relief not to be recording yet another Beethoven symphony!) communicates itself to us listeners. The very start of the concerto sounds simply splendid, with those timpani thwacks so well recorded, while the solo bassoon, a few moments later, makes his rhythm absolutely clear.
