Notes and Editorial Reviews

Florence Austral (her real name was Florence Wilson) was born in Richmond, a suburb of Nellie Melba's hometown of Melbourne. Her voice was discovered at an early age and she received professional training at the Melbourne Conservatory. At twenty she studied with the Viennese soprano Elise Wiedermann and in 1918 she went to New York to study with Gabriele Sibella. She was offered a contract at the MET but turned it down and went to London instead where she sang Brunnhilde with the British National Opera. She was fortunate in that her career started at the top without the arduous but instructive years spent in provincial theaters. "In the early Twenties Florence Austral was the most important recording artist we had, thanks to the beauty, Read more power and compass of her voice," said Fred Gaisberg from HMV with whom Austral had an exclusive contract. To such well authorized praise one might add that despite its great volume, the voice was steady and well focused. Until the end it never lost its inner tension and there were no signs of wobble. The fact that she never pushed her voice let her survive the dramatic repertory with hardly any damage. Austral's recordings show her in her prime. Her intonation is perfect and her vocal style is remarkably clear, almost instrumental, but the beauty of her timbre and her warm phrasing never made her interpretations seem cold or uninvolved. Even though her top, which could cut through a full orchestra like a laser beam, might not have been ideally represented in her acoustic recordings, one can imagine the effect her high notes must have created in the opera house.
