Notes and Editorial Reviews
After reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography, A Long Walk To Freedom, cellist Maria Kliegel felt compelled to express her admiration for the former South African President through music. What resulted was an extended, four-part suite scored for cello and percussion from the pen of Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann, a name otherwise unknown to me. His Hommage ŕ Nelson M. attempts to mirror the circumstances and hopes of Mandela's remarkable life. Indeed, we can read the details of his long imprisonment, depicted in the opening "Robben-Island" section via the cellist's internal, wailing threnody, which evolves into petulant, wall-banging staccato flurries. Yet listeners who approach this 40-minute work without aid
of a program will discover a slowly unfolding canvas of ingenuously deployed instrumental writing, whose spacious lyrical stretches sing with proportion and taste. Both recording and interpretation are all one could ask for. And the disc's proceeds go directly to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. All told, a worthy project from head to toe.
