Excellent Swedish Chamber Music July 21, 2012
By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews
"This is an excellent survey of Swedish composer Franz Berwald's three string quartets. The Yggdrasil Quartet, a technically accomplished Swedish ensemble, has this music in its blood, resulting in a performance that is accessible, authentic, and a pleasure to hear. The 33 minute Quartet # 1 in G Minor was written by a very young Berwald (22 years old), but it reflects mature compositional techniques. The later Quartets # 2 and # 3 are more compact, date from the 1840's, and show Berwald's growth as a composer. All three quartets fall sqarely in the Romantic tradition. Excellent sound quality, as usual from BIS. Recommended."
