Notes and Editorial Reviews

This pair of discs was recorded in the same year. The latter disc is new to me, a program that alternates vocal and instrumental music, placing the most elaborate settings (for 20, 18, and 16 voices) at beginning, middle, and end. The only really familiar piece, though, is the Sonata pian e forte, a linchpin of several earlier Gabrieli collections. The rest are unfamiliar. While this disc lacks the organizing principle of the most recent Gabrieli disc to come my way, it offers an interesting group of works performed on Parrott's highest level.

The other disc spans the era of music in Venice from Gabrieli to Vivaldi, a time that saw Venice's political power decline. As it happens, Gabrieli is represented by In ecclesiis, which
Read more figured on that recent disc cited above. The other composers worked at St. Mark's, except for Vivaldi who lived after the basilica had ceased to be the center of Venetian music. He also represents a period of excruciating Latin textual composition, as in the motet sung here, Clarae stellae. These two discs are a sharp contrast to older performances of Gabrieli, which used larger choirs to different effect.

With two discs for the price of one (midprice at that), this lacks all texts and anything more than a brief note. Yet the music is largely unfamiliar and the performances are stunning.
