Nino Piccaluga is an example of the incredible number of Italian voices, even in the B and C category, in the period between the two World Wars. Even if he could not compete with the great names of his day, the music he sang ran in his blood. Can the same thing be said for many of the singers of today? Critical listening to Piccaluga's records from today's point of view may not fully explain the considerable success he enjoyed, even at the height of his career. His time was considered the hey-day of verismo-singing with all its merits and even more bad habits. He was an extremely handsome man, tall for an Italian. He was idolized by the female public and his passionate and convincing acting on the stage made quite an impression on everyone. Read more His full bodied voice was very attractive and appealing.
