Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ensemble 11 was founded in 1997 and represents among the chamber music ensembles of the Vienna Philharmonic a completely new concept. Already in Mozart's day there were bands consisting exclusively of wind instruments, which successfully performed arrangements of pieces by various composers. Like the ensembles of Mozart's day Ensemble 11 has the ten classical wind instruments represented, but to get to 11, Karl Jeitler, the founder of the group has added percussion. With this combination of instruments, it is possible to perform a varied repertoire, and by virtue of the dynamic character of the wind instruments, the ensemble is acoustically well-suited to larger concert halls. All the arrangements of the Strauss pieces heard on this CD have Read more been written exclusively for the group by Anton Othmar Sollfeiner. Read less
