This disc received the 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without Orchestra)."
Janos Starker has recorded the Bach cello suites several times. The first set was recorded in all-night sessions that began when Starker finished performing in the pit at the Metropolitan Opera. This recording is a little more expansive and less controlled, but it still bears the Starker hallmarks: perfect cleanliness, attention to detail and directness that are lacking in other Bach recordings. What Starker understands the best is that this music doesn't require excess flourish. It speaks very well as it is.
