Notes and Editorial Reviews

Canada has produced a great many excellent opera singers: Emma Albani, Edward Johnson, Leopold Simoneau, George London, Teresa Stratas, to mention just a few - and Raoul Jobin. In the tradition of French tenors - French more in the stylistic than the geographical sense - he was the successor to Georges Thill and Andre d'Arkor and himself was followed by Alain Vanzo. He was born in Quebec where he studied and gave his first concerts. He went to Paris for further study and had a supporting role in the world premiere of Magnard's "Guercoeur." He gave close to 100 performances at the Met and appeared in all the major European opera houses. After his farewell from the operatic stage he went back to Canada where he opened a singing school in Read more Montreal. He continued to give concerts until 1960. He died in the city of his birth, Quebec. Read less
