Notes and Editorial Reviews

Catherine King, like many others, sometimes seems reluctant to disturb the liquid flow of her lines with consonants sufficiently explosive to give clear endings to her words. Her use of period pronunciation, the amiable fashion for which has receded since the 1970s (‘loove’ for love, ‘bloudless’ for bloodless, ‘hairt’ for heart, etc.), makes the enclosed texts all the more useful. In all other respects she is the mistress of all she purveys, particularly impressive in the solemn songs (of which there are more than a few), enhanced by her skilful shading of timbre.

The programme happily juxtaposes the vocal items with instrumental ones, some of which are given in a variety of reduced consort forms, a practice often followed in
Read more domestic performances in Dowland’s time. The Frog Galiard and Captaine Digorie his Galiard come in the unusual guise of bass flute, bass lute duets. There is an air of appealing informality and shared ‘conversation’ about the consort, whether alone or in support of the voice, and it is well served by the excellently balanced recording. Jacob Heringman, a most sensitive accompanist, shows himself as no less eloquent a soloist: his tone is good, his delivery is clean, and his use of rubato shows no trace of contrivance. If I single him out for special attention, it is simply because he is the only one who is present in every item. So, here is another disc to add to the growing number of fine recordings that reveal some of Dowland’s many faces.
