Sabine Kalter was born in Jaroslau, Galicia. She studied at the Vienna Music Academy before Rainer Simons, then director of the Vienna Volksoper, was able to obtain the 23 year old's services. Already her first two roles in Wolf-Ferrari and D'Albert revealed that she would soon be moving on to bigger stages. In fact, she left Vienna two years later for the Hamburg Opera House where she sang in Aida. The standards Kalter had to live up to were considerably higher than in Vienna. In no time she became one of Hamburg's most popular singers. Soon she was invited to sing on the international stage and appeared for the first time at the Vienna State Opera in 1924. considered "persona non grata" and was forced to leave the Hamburg stage after almost two decades. She moved to London and appeared regularly at Covent Garden. London became her home where she went on to appear in concerts and became a singing teacher. In 1950 she gave one last concert in Hamburg. She died in London in 1957. Read less
