It is good to have this long-esteemed version of Swan Lake available again, with the sound brushed up to something very near to modern standards, and at so modest a price. There are so many versions of this score that perhaps it may be well to say that this is very much that of the Royal Ballet, with a few omissions, especially in the last act. As befits a conductor who for a number of years worked a lot with Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes, the performance is preeminently one of the theatre, with one or two numbers suggesting over-accenting to help a faltering dancer, such as the ever-popular Adagio with the violin solo (in which, by the way, the soloist's tone is rather thin and arid), and the initial appearance of the swans. of course, many recordings of this music or parts of it. A really complete recording occupies three records but this one probably contains as much of the score as the vast majority of people other than dedicated balletomanes will want (readers with extensive back numbers will find reference to WSM's original review useful, since it outlines in detail the omissions of this version). As such it is recommended strongly.
