Notes and Editorial Reviews

It is scarcely credible that it must be a full quarter of a century since I first revelled in the glorious singing in this recital. Listening to the sound that issues from this digital re-processing makes it still more unbelievable. Slight traces of tape hiss there may be to give away the analogue origins; and yet individual instruments sound forth with a clarity that I find quite astonishing.

Quite what I can usefully say about the singing to add to all the praise that has been heaped upon this recital over the years I don't know. The LP has scarcely been out of the catalogue in the 26 years since it was first issued, and I for one have certainly never heard more glorious operetta singing—or indeed choral and orchestral
Read more accompaniment—than there is here. It's music and singing to swoon over, one of the classic recitals of the century, and a CD collection that should surely find an honoured place in any record collection.
