Notes and Editorial Reviews

This Don Giovanni is more than the sum of its vocal parts. It coheres, has genuine dramatic impetus, and carries the stamp of a conductor who has unusual skill in drawing out the pictorial elements in the score. He seems not particularly interested in being neat, taut, or 'electric'; he allows the music, and the singers, time to breathe, though there is no cumbersome slowness or pretentious solemnity. He makes us see the gestures in the score, Leporello making courtly obeisance to the statue for instance, he helps us to know at exactly what point Anna's suspicions about Giovanni grow into certainty; in the very opening of the Overture, out of the darkness of the D minor chords the steps of the stone guest begin to lumber with inexorable Read more menace.

As so often in recordings of this period, we are drawn into the drama by the balance which unlike that prevailing nowadays, favours the singers. Together they give a strong performance. Anton Dermota provides a graceful ''Dalla sua pace.'' Della Casa has always been the general favourite, and she among the women, with Walter Berry among the men gives the most satisfying individual performances.

-- Gramophone [9/1989]

Krips's version, recorded in 1955, has remained at or near the top of the list of recommendations ever since. Its intense, dramatic account of the Don's disappearance into hell has rarely been equaled; the finale to Act I is also electrifying. As a bass Don, Siepi is marvelously convincing, but there is hardly a weak link in the rest of the cast.
