Notes and Editorial Reviews

This record is an excellent example of what might be called the Counter Reformation sound. For although we today regard Palestrina and Victoria as great contrapuntists, in reality they were much more interested in creating grand edifices of sonority from the choirs who sang in the resonant basilicas of Rome. This Roman sound is no less impressive than the Venetian one which involved the use of instruments and in his late Masses, Palestrina achieved a staggering weight of tone. If you listen to the places where he uses the tutti at the climaxes in the present Mass, using the material of his motet Tu es petrus, you will hear music indeed fit for-Christ's vicar on earth.

King's College Choir is at this time clearly a fine vehicle
Read more to express such glories, its boys' tone clear as a bell and the men strong and accurate. Cleobury seems to have eliminated most of the preciousness which has irritated some of us in the past. Nor does he interpret the acoustics of the famous chapel as meaning slow tempos. He keeps things moving and yet there is no loss of clarity (clearly the recording engineers are also to be congratulated). He doesn't mind the oldfashioned virtues of shaping the phrases, and even (without gimmicks) the overall pattern of the music. May we hope for more while this lasts!
