Here is a collection that embraces both the sublime and the ridiculous in ancient music, for while the Renaissance gave birth to the serenely contemplative sacred music of Guillaume Dufay and Josquin Des Prez, it also witnessed some astonishing mavericks, such as the singly-named Solage (history has misplaced the first name,) whose 'Fumeux fume' is one of the most bizarre pieces of all time, a polyphonic composition for bass voices in an ultra-chromatic, practically atonal style.
