Beaux Arts Trio. Philips 412 891-2 [with Trio in D, Op. 70, No. 1 (Ghost)].

The Beaux Arts take a contemplative, Apollonian view of the work, a reaction to their earlier, lighter reading from the 1960s. They bring almost too much finesse and refinement to their playing of the opening movement, which emerges as a very moderate Allegro moderato and almost succumbs to localized effect. The Andante is the key to their interpretation of the piece: where others treat it as a reverie, they see it as a meditation, and take a full 13½ minutes to play it.
