Hovhaness draws musical and spiritual inspiration as much from eastern culture as from music of the western Middle Ages and the Renaissance. As a result, his music uses melodies and harmonies which are inflected with a sound which is not quite oriental, not quite western. It is pretty, consonant and exotic, evoking the timeless atmosphere of a Maxfield Parrish painting. Yolanda Kondonassis, one of the world's greatest harpists, gives this music a most respectful and inspired performance, expressively accompanied by guitarist David Leisner, flautist Eugenia Zuckerman, and the string ensemble I Fiamminghi. This disc includes the world premiere recording of Hovhaness' 1983 'Spirit of the Trees.' Kondonassis dedicates it to the preservation of the world's rainforests and a portion of the disc's profit goes to their protection. |
