Notes and Editorial Reviews

Of the many recordings of the Barber, this is one of the very best. Abbado’s 1972 performance scraped away layers of traditional performing practice, revealing the sparkling colours beneath – the whole work was sung in the original keys. The LSO played superlatively well, with an unmatched blend of finesse and panache. The cast was the A-team of the day, performing together regularly on stage with great gain to their work in the recording studio... All in all a vocal fiesta... highly recommendable...

Brilliant  October 14, 2017 By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "This is an outstanding cast and recording in every way. Especially since it is in the original keys with Teresa Berganza in the role of Rosina. The opera was written for a mezzo and Berganza is considered by many to be the best Rosina ever. Sopranos liked the role so much that they stole it for themselves raising the keys to suit their higher registers. There are many good and even great recording with sopranos but the role is meant for the mezzo vocal quality which suits the character so much better. Luigi Alva and Herman Prey are wonderful in their roles as well as the rest of the cast. This is one to include in your collection for sure." Report Abuse
