Notes and Editorial Reviews

Named after the charming “Robin is to the greenwood gone,“ this is in turn one of the most charming lute-anthologies to come my way in a long while. O'Dette combines throughout a lyrical sensitivity with flawless technique. His part-playing and inflection are equally enviable, and where he stands apart from the many excellent technicians in the younger generation of lutenists is the effortless musicality of the interpretations. The anthology is very nicely arranged, in addition— better than the listings above, in fact! Opening with the Batchelar piece, O'Dette proceeds through sections devoted to “Ballad Tunes“ (with the anonymous—and here oddly harmonized in the opening measure of the chorus—“Greensleeves“ followed by Cuttinge's spare and Read more vaguely bizarre variations), “Early Elizabethan Music,“ “Scottish Music,“ then Holborne, Huwet and Robinson.

Some of the material was new to me on lute, familiar from keyboards or consort. Some of the material was new to me period. And even “Greensleeves“ sounded new to me in O'Dette's masterful hands! So if you're thinking, Right, another lute thing . . . think, as they say, again.
