Notes and Editorial Reviews

This disc essentially duplicates one of Mstislav Rostropovich's most famous and successful recordings (for EMI), with the sensible addition of the pieces for solo cello dedicated to Paul Sacher. Rostropovich was, of course, the artist for whom both concertos were written, and even if his recording were not as fine as it is, it would still be important on that account alone. That said, Christian Poltéra has nothing to fear from the comparison: he is a superb cellist in this music, playing the Dutilleux with a richly inflected array of tone colors, and charting the emotional journey of the Lutoslawski from its numb opening through the lyrically effusive cantilena (third movement) with unerring conviction.

The Polish
Read more composer's Sacher Variation is a brief encore piece, but Dutilleux's Trois strophes sur le nom de Sacher is a major contribution to the repertoire for solo cello, and it has never been played better than here. The ORF Orchestra sounds quite comfortable with the idiom in both works. Jac van Steen secures fine results from all sections, and the BIS sonics, while perhaps a touch reverberant for the densest textural layers of Lutoslawski's finale, offer excellent balances between cello and orchestra as well as plenty of characterful detail at the soft dynamics at which much of this music operates. It's good to see young cellists taking up Rostropovich's challenge in this music and emerging triumphant. He would have been pleased.
