Notes and Editorial Reviews

Arthur Benjamin only spent the first three years of his life in Sydney where he was born. He then moved to Brisbane where he began his musical education. His mother was an amateur pianist who gave him his first lessons. His real musical education began in 1911 when he entered the Royal College of Music in London. Among his fellow students were Arthur Bliss, Herbert Howells, Ivor Gurney, Frederick Thurston and the Goosens family. His teachers were Sir Hubert Parry and Sir Charles Villars Stanford. The War interrupted all their studies. Benjamin ended up in a German prisoner of war camp. Soon after the War, he returned to Sydney where he became Professor of the Piano at the Conservatory. He returned to London in 1921 where he began a Read more distinguished career as a piano teacher at the Royal College of Music. Among his pupils were Muir Mathieson, Peggy Glanville-Hicks, Bernard Stevens and Benjamin Britten. About Britten, Benjamin wrote: "Britten is enormously talented, but unfortunately he has had far too early success; it's rather gone to his head. He's been a trifle ungrateful to the many musicians who have helped him. What you will be like at 50 is what counts in the serious musical world." Arthur Benjamin is a very underrated composer. It is good to see Tall Poppies devoted this effort to his music. The program booklet notes are exceptional. Read less
