Notes and Editorial Reviews
Georges Baklanoff was born in St. Petersburg. At the opera house in Kiev he made a great debut in Rubinstein's "The Demon" in 1903. He soon found himself at the Imperial Opera House in Moscow. In 1910 he gave his first performance at Covent Garden and at the same year he sang Rigoletto at the Met. As one of the most outstanding and impressive singing-actors of his time, his achievements, similar to those of Chaliapin in the bass repertory, were truly exemplary. His portrayals always had something demonic and bizarre about them. This was guaranteed to enthrall the public. Jarmila Novotna, who was his partner in "Rigoletto" in Prague and in "The Tales of Hoffman" in Berlin in 1931, was among his admirers. She was quoted in Lanfranco Rasponi's

book "The Last Primadonnas" as saying "his voice was not exactly velvety in texture but it was infinitely expressive and chilling."

Bernd Aldenhoff was not only one of the last heldentenors, but also one of the most interesting. The same Knappertsbusch called him the most "human heldentenor" of his time. As an interpreter, Aldenhoff was, without a doubt, the most detailed and sensitive Wagner tenor of his generation. He died in 1959 at the height of his powers from food poisoning. Read less
