Notes and Editorial Reviews

John Donald Robb graduated from Yale and received his legal training at the Harvard Law School. He practiced international law in New York City from 1922 to 1941, leaving his musical studies and composing as a constant avocation. He studied with Horatio Parker, Roy Harris, Paul Hindemith and Nadia Boulanger. In 1941 he was appointed Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of New Mexico. A year later he became acting Dean of the College of Fine Arts and, from 1947 through 1957, was its Dean. Hayg Boyadjian was born of Armenian parents in Paris, France where he spent his early years. His family immigrated to the United States, settling in the Boston area. He studied at the New England Conservatory and at Read more Brandeis University. Mary Jeanne van Appledorn is the Paul Whitfield Horn Professor of Music Composition and Theory at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Her Rhapsody recalls those ancient wandering minstrels (rhapsodists) who sang the epic poems from the Iliad of Homer and even sometimes their own compositions. Michael Mauldin received his Master of Music degree in composition from the University of New Mexico. He served for seven years as the Director of the Albuquerque Boy Choir. Desert Light received its first performance on October 18, 1987 in Santa Fe, New Mexico with Stewart Robertson conducting the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra. Read less
