Notes and Editorial Reviews

BONJOUR MON COEUR Dirk Snellings, dir; Capilla Flamenca RICERCAR RIC 290 (64:07 Text and Translation)

Music of LASSUS, PEVERNAGE, CASTRO, SANDRIN, CERTON, RIPPE, ORTIZ, SCHMIDT, PHALÈSE, VREEDMAN, WILLAERT

This program offers a lot more than the Lassus chanson suggested by the disc title. It begins with the chanson that he set to a poem by Pierre de Ronsard, then the same melody set to a Huguenot pious contrafact (Jean Read more Pasquier published two volumes of such texts for Lassus melodies), a German contrafact of Catholic origin, and settings of the same chanson text by three other composers. That’s just the beginning. At the end we hear Pierre Sandrin’s Doulce mémoire , two movements of Lassus’s parody Mass on that tune, a lute arrangement of the tune by Albert de Rippe, a gamba arrangement by Diego Ortiz, and a song by Pierre Certon composed as a response to the song. In between, we hear other Lassus songs, instrumental arrangements of them, polyphonic arrangements of the monodic songs, and more contrafacta. In one case, Dessus le marché d’Arras , originally a popular song, it is Lassus who arranges Adrian Willaert’s four-part arrangement for six parts.

The 27 tracks on this disc would probably puzzle the casual listener, who may or may not hear the similarities. Only the enlightening annotation by Ignace Bossuyt reveals all the connections among the pieces. It opens up the world of 16th-century secular music in all its intricacy. The performances are as stylish as might be expected from the ensemble, which has given us so many fine programs on this label. Snellings is the bass among the four singers, supported by five players. Devotees of Renaissance secular song will enjoy the interplay among these composers who so appreciated each other’s work.
