Notes and Editorial Reviews

While the art on the cover shows Meyer Kupferman to be a representational painter with a touch of goofiness, the music within reveals a composer more sympathetic to abstract expressionism and pretty serious about it. Kupferman's work is largely atonal, vigorous and robust with influences coming from his Romanian-Jewish heritage and the jazz groups he played in as a youth in Brooklyn. The 'Winter' Symphony is a big, tough piece (Kupferman refers to the work as "the dragon") whose fierce climate makes Vaughan Williams 'Sinfonia Antarctica' sound like a walk in the park. Five years in the writing, it would seem to represent a magnum opus of Kupferman's later career. The 'Concerto Brevis' for flute and orchestra is an altogether more lyrical Read more affair, though it's a nervous, flighty kind of lyricism which is always on the move, never resting harmonically in one place for very long. Both works are strikingly performed under the composer's direction and are vividly recorded.
REVIEWS:
Fanfare (1-2/00, p.274) - "...['Winter Symphony'] is one of Kupferman's best works....For those who have been collecting the series this is recommended, and for those coming to this interesting figure it is, along with Volume 10...a good place to start expoloring Kupferman's distinctive voice."
