As an organist, William Lloyd Webber (1914-1982) was a prodigy, but as a composer, he considered himself a man who missed his time. More inspired by the romanticism of Rachmaninov and Sibelius than by his contemporaries, his compositions may not have been fashionable. Instead, they inherited a timeless beauty.
A shy man, Lloyd Webber wrote with a simplicity of line. He used few words and few notes. Patient pacing marks all of his choral works. Even a powerful anthem such as 'Dominus Firmamentum Meum,' though the voices spiral heavenwards, moves slowly and deliberately. The complicated vocal orchestrations of the ambitious 'Missa Sanctae Maria Magdalenae' are more vigorous, earnest and passionate, but always retaining a regal

Performed by Lloyd Webber's own Choir of All Saints (he served as organist and choirmaster), this 1999 recording succeeds in capturing the spirit and emotion of the pieces.
