Notes and Editorial Reviews

Bohuslav Martinu was an unbelievably prolific composer, which may explain the uneven quality of his music, but it is agreed that the Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani of 1938 is one of his finest efforts. It is a dark, restless piece, an emotional cousin to Bartók's 'Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta' of 1936 and Arthur Honegger's Symphony for Strings and Trumpet of 1941--not all that surprising, as all three wartime compositions were commissioned and premiered by the same man, Swiss conductor Paul Sacher. The Double Concerto is the major item on this program, which includes a double clarinet concerto by the 18th-century Bohemian composer Franz Krommer and a little-known duo concertante work by Camille Read more Saint-Saëns, 'La Muse et le Poete' for violin, cello and orchestra.
The performances on this disc feature the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic of Czechoslovakia, an ensemble founded in 1946. They give an impassioned performance of their namesake's work and are joined by some very distinguished soloists, New York Philharmonic principal clarinetist Stanley Drucker with his wife Naomi Drucker in the Krommer and Philharmonic Associate concertmaster Charles Rex with his brother, Atlanta Symphony principal cellist Christopher Rex in the Saint-Saëns.
