Notes and Editorial Reviews

For all his brainy complexity, the American serialist Milton Babbitt demonstrated a surprising affinity for the female voice. This album features the contemporary music diva Bethany Beardslee ("Philomel") and the lesser known Lynne Webber ("Phonemena"), both of whom handle these challenging scores with ease. Even though one can accurately call Babbitt Schoenberg's direct heir, he shares none of Schoenberg's knotty angst; his music--formidable as it is--has a definite wit, energy, and polish in addition to a tactile sensitivity for whatever solo instrument--including voice--he is writing for.
PHILOMEL catches Babbitt at a time when he was still involved with electronic music, especially during its jumbo-sized RCA synthesizer beginnings.

Ms. Weber sounds equally comfortable in both incarnations, as does the great pianist Robert Miller who also straddles the two worlds on his featured pieces "Post- Partitions" and "Reflections."
