Notes and Editorial Reviews

The performances date from before the time when exposition repeats became the norm. Nevertheless, the first two symphonies readily demonstrate Walter's Viennese mellowness, his inheritance of the classical tradition and willingness to be romantically free in slow movements; the result is noble rather than self-consciously idiosyncratic and the inherent warmth and grace still remain intact. There is no lack of vitality, even if the finale of the Second Symphony is lilting rather than forceful. A dramatic yet never overdriven account of the Coriolan Overture acts as a satisfying encore.

-- Ivan March, Gramophone [8/1995]
